Toy Story 5 Trailer Pits Woody and Buzz Against a Digital Device
Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, establishing Pixar as a major animation studio and introducing viewers to beloved characters like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now household names.
Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will address the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
The Latest Addition: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Frightens the Toys
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — getting a brand new plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She acquires her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.
The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4
One thing the teaser avoids is why Woody is returned with his friends in the child's bedroom. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys find good homes.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in Bonnie's room unexpectedly is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have come back with him. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?
Continuity from the Last Installment
Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to Jessie (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge attached to her shirt.
Hopefully she is still the driving force among the toys.
Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on June 19, 2026.
